Leukodystrophies
The leukodystrophies are uncommon diseases that affect
the cells of the brain. In particular, the diseases affect
the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and guards
nerve cells. Damage to this sheath slows down or blocks
messages among the brain and the rest of the body. This
results to problems with
- Movement
- Speaking
- Vision
- Hearing
- Mental and physical development
The majority of the leukodystrophies are genetic. They
generally appear during infancy or childhood. They can
be tough to detect early as children seem healthy at first.
Though, symptoms gradually get worse over time.
There are no heals for any of the leukodystrophies. Medicines,
speech therapy and physical therapy may help with symptoms.
Researchers are testing bone marrow transplantation as
a treatment for a few of the leukodystrophies.
