Adhesions
Adhesions are bands of fibrous
tissue. They can connect the loops of the intestines
to each other, to close by organs or to the
wall of the abdomen. They can pull segment of the intestines
out of place. This might block food from passing through
the intestine.
Sometimes adhesions are currently at
birth. But the majority of them form
after surgery on the abdomen. A few adhesions don't
cause any problems. But when they partly
or totally block the intestines, they cause symptoms.
These can comprise crampy abdominal pain, vomiting,
bloating, an inability to pass gas and constipation.
Some adhesions depart by themselves.
If they partially block your intestines, a diet low
in fiber can let food to move simply through the affected
area. In few cases, surgery may be essential to remove
the adhesions. But surgery to correct adhesions
can augment the risk of more adhesions.
