Asbestosis is a diseases caused by the inhalation of asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral that was used as an insulator and fire retardant. It comes in several colors depending on what mineral it is found with. White and brown asbestos are the two more dangerous colors, white being associated with magnesium, and brown being associated with grunerite and iron. There are two general types of asbestos, amphibole and chrysotile.
There is no curative treatment. Oxygen therapy at home is often essential to relieve the shortness of breath. Supportive treatment of symptoms includes respiratory physiotherapy to remove secretions from the lungs by postural drainage, chest percussion, and vibration. Nebulized medications may be agreed in order to dilute secretions.
Asbestosis is a chronic inflammatory medical condition upsetting the parenchymal tissue of the lungs. It occurs after long-term, heavy exposure to asbestos, e.g. in mining, and is therefore regarded as an occupational lung disease. Sufferers have harsh dyspnea (shortness of breath) and are at an increased risk regarding several different types of lung cancer.
