Home  List of Disease  Adrenoleukodystrophy

Disease Name:Adrenoleukodystrophy
Adrenoleukodystrophy
Alternate Names:Addison-Schilder Disease
Virus Name:ALD (Adrenoleukodystrophy) is mainly caused by a change in the gene called the ALD gene. The ALD gene makes a protein called ALD protein and these proteins when put together forms the organs and tissues in the body like myelin sheath. In this disorder, the myelin sheath is and the nerve signals are interrupted and it is slowed down or stopped completely.
Treatment:While there is at present no cure for the disease, some dietary treatments, for example, a 4:1 mixture of glyceryl trioleate and glyceryl trierucate in mixture with a diet low in VLCSFA , have been used with limited accomplishment, especially before disease symptoms appear. A 2005 study shows positive long-term results with this approach. A 2007 report also appraises "Lorenzo's oil". X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy has a very variable clinical course, even within a single family.
Description:Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare, inherited disorder that leads to progressive brain damage, failure of the adrenal glands and eventually death. ALD is one illness in a group of inherited disorders known as leukodystrophies. Adrenoleukodystrophy progressively damages the myelin, a complex fatty neural tissue that insulates many nerves of the central and peripheral nervous systems, eventually destroy it. Without myelin, nerves are unable to conduct an impulse, leading to rising disability as myelin destruction increases and intensifies.
